Tokyo magic hour

Director Amir Muhammad / 2005 / Malaysia

Tokyo Magic Hour is a poetic and experimental tale of a love affair between two men. It unfolds through 60 traditional Malay poems, known as puntun, which are organised into six sections - Meeting, Loving, Lusting, Magic, Parting, Remembering - reflecting the chronology of the romance's life cycle. One section, Magic, takes a markedly different form, signalling a shift from the more exultant poems of passion to the darker and more mournful verse of parting. Magic presents traditional Malay Muslim charms, rituals and dream interpretations, and is intended to represent an eruption of the uncanny into the tale of love. With an edgy soundtrack and the Tokyo cityscape forming a backdrop to the poems' often-bucolic imagery, Tokyo Magic Hour evokes an atmosphere of dislocation. Audiences will find this intriguing and imaginative offering coming as close to video art as it does to film.
