tony takitani
Based on a story by Haruki Murakami, Tony Takitani is a melancholy parable of the times.
After a solitary childhood, and an art school education that left him cold, Tony Takitani (Issey Ogata) finds his true vocation as a technical drawer. In satisfied solitude, he revels in the precision and accuracy required by his work. The day he meets Eiko, his life changes and he feels vibrantly alive for the first time. Eiko is his perfect companion. But her passion for exquisite designer clothes threatens to become an all-consuming fixation, and he is forced to make an intervention, with tragic consequences.
Beautifully shot, like a series of moving tableaux, director Jun Ichikawa effortlessly avoids all of the book-to-film pitfalls, creating an emotionally resonant film that is at once both literary and luminously cinematic. Tony Takitani won Fipresci and Special Jury prizes at Locarno, and was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize of the World Cinema section at Sundance. "A refined, delicately poetic reverie on loss and memory." - Variety
