ROMANCE OF ASTREA AND CELADON, THE
les amours d\\\'astrée et de céladon
“The film is great fun, great pleasure, and great cinema.” - Cinemascope
Veteran French New Wave filmmaker Eric Rohmer calls The Romance of Astrea and Celadon his final film at age 87. Adapted from the literary classic L'Astrée by Honoré d'Urfé, the film is a tale about shepherds, nymphs and druids set in the fifth century. Love is the subject, but (in typical Rohmer style) it is a love full of paradoxes, contradictions and the absurdities of courtship.
Celadon and Astrea are hopelessly in love, until Astrea casts off Celadon when misled by a jealous suitor. A nymph rescues the heartbroken man when he throws himself into a river, but Astrea still believes him to be dead. Disguising himself as a female druid, Celadon befriends his former sweetheart to win back her favour.
