LITTLE MOTH

Director Peng Tao / 2007 / China

A heartbreaking Dickens-like tale about the harsh realities of child exploitation that is both moving and ruthlessly unsentimental.

After the death of her mother, 11-year-old ‘Little Moth' is put up for adoption. She suffers from toxic blood poisoning that renders her unable to walk, and the appearance of a couple offering to look after her seems like a long-awaited glimmer of hope. But she soon realises that her new parents are not what they seem, adopting her not for love but to put her to work on the streets as a beggar. As other opportunistic criminals try and take advantage of Little Moth, things start to unravel for everyone involved.

“You'd be wise to catch Little Moth before it flutters away.” - Eye Weekly
