NIGHT AND DAY

Director Hong Sang-soo / 2008 / South Korea

Korean expats spend lazy days in the city of love, in the latest offering from Hong Sang-soo (Woman on the Beach, MIFF 07).

Nominated for the Golden Bear at the 2008 Berlin International Film Festival, prolific South Korean director Hong Sang-soo's latest film tackles the peculiar existential aimlessness of the traveller. Hong's first comedy to be set abroad, Night and Day brings us to Paris where Sungnam, a celebrated painter in his early 40s, has escaped to after almost being arrested in Seoul for smoking marijuana. Unable to speak even a word of French, Sungnam finds himself gravitating to Paris's Korean expatriate community. Whiling the weeks away in Parisian side streets and cafes, Sungnam indulges in flirtations with acquaintances old and new, but inexorably his old life in Seoul is drawing him back.
