IN MY FATHER'S COUNTRY

Director Tom Murray / 2008 / Australia

It is happening now: in our country.

Shot by Dutch cinematographer Leonard Retel Helmrich, known for his innovative camera techniques, this documentary is one of the most exquisitely crafted pieces of filmmaking in this section - and beyond.

In My Father's Country
takes us inside the Dhuruputji community in remote Australia as it prepares a young boy for a ritual initiation ceremony. Handled with great sensitivity and humour, it's a rite of passage that most non-indigenous Australians will have never seen before.

“We are witness to a world as seen by a seven-year-old Yolngu Aboriginal boy: The Simpsons, clouds, football, swimming, spiders, grass, hunting for yabbies, going to school… and finally his initiation ceremony.” - filmmaker Tom Murray

Tom Murray and Graeme Isaac are guests of the festival.
