FOX AND HIS FRIENDS

FAUSTRECHT DER FREIHEIT

Director Rainer Werner Fassbinder / 1975 / Germany

“One of Fassbinder's easiest, most naturalistic movies.” - New York Times

Fox is a financially strapped gay man who performs in a travelling circus as ‘Fox the Talking Head'. When he wins the lottery, his life takes an upswing - or so it seems. His supposed new friends (and lover) eventually expose themselves as swindling wolves in sheep's clothing.

Playing the none-too-clever hero of this doomed tale, filmmaker Rainer Werner Fassbinder provides a warts-and-all depiction of homosexuality at a time when Hollywood still considered such subject matter untouchable. The film's brutal frankness mixed with human compassion make it a hallowed work by one of New German Cinema's masters.

Features a haunting score by Peer Raben and stunning cinematography by Michael Ballhaus.
