FISH TANK

Director Andrea Arnold / 2009 / UK

Co-winner of the Jury Prize at Cannes this year, along with Thirst (also screening as part of this year's Neighbourhood Watch program).

The second feature from Andrea Arnold (Red Road, MIFF 07) delves into Ken Loach territory with an insightful tale about a disaffected teenage girl living in the grimy world of the Essex council estates.

Since being kicked out of school, fierce-tempered and foul-mouthed 15-year-old Mia (Katie Jarvis) spends her days guzzling beer and practising hip-hop dance moves. Her world is up-ended by the arrival of her mother's new boyfriend (Michael Fassbender; Hunger, MIFF 08); the attraction between the two is immediate and palpable.

“The performances of Jarvis and Fassbender are outstanding and their chemistry fizzes - and then explodes. It is another highly intelligent, involving film from one of the most powerful voices in British cinema.” - Guardian
