MARY STUART

Director Peter Butler / 1982 / UK

The story of the opera depicts the conflict between two Queens. Queen Elizabeth, who claimed the throne as daughter of Henry VIII, and Mary Stuart, who claimed it as daughter of James V of Scotland, and granddaughter of Henry VII.

As Henry VIII's marriage has never been recognised by the Catholic Church, on the death of Mary Tudor in 1557, Mary Stuart's claim to the throne of England was a legitimate one for the Catholic world.
