THE SUPREME KID
In this first comedy feature from writer-director Peter Bryant, two drifters, Wes and Ruben, thumb their way across Canada. They act like a cross between hoboes and hippies, and in one town an old man who is showing them to a room, refers to them as 'hippos'. They run into tough cops, a dispirited bunch of Hells Angels on small machines, an easy-going girl, and a grubby thief called Wilbur. He dreams of a great career built on the big-time heist, but the reality is very different, and he spends days between meals. Ruben is an experienced drop-out, and he passes on his road-lore to his friend, who appears more of a college kid on vacation. At times, he wants to give up the hobo's life, but he is drawn back to it and to his casual and erratic adventures with Ruben. The two of them bring a comic zest to their travels, and their routines at times recall the great screen tramps of earlier days.
