COURTING COURTNEY

Director Paul Tarantino / 1996 / USA

Courting Courtney is Paul Tarantino's (no relation) first project, his previous experience in film coming from his job in the marketing department of Walt Disney Studios and the classes he attended (without enrolling) at USC.

This good-natured comedy looks at the humour and pitfalis of dating in the 90s. Nick, a young film director, sets out to make a documentary about his friend Courtney's quest for a husband, as she approaches 30. Numerous comic moments arise as we witness her search for an ideal man through a series of unsuccessful dates. The film is at its funniest and most satirical in the scenes depicting inappropriate partners, from self-help sleaze Dr Phelps to the seemingly stoned garage attendant, Chad. In light of Courtney's dilemma, it's not surprising that Phelps' 'weight watchers' class has become a self-help group for cynical, dateless women.
