BONTOC EULOGY
fascinating film about Marlon E Fuentes' Filipino grandfather, one of 1100 tribal relatives brought to the USA as anthropological specimens' for the 1904 St Louis World Fair. The memorable opening image of the filmmaker sitting cross-legged in front of an old phonograph listening to the early cylinder wordings of his grandfather's voice and music gets up what is a personal film dealing with history, memory and imagination. The film fuses rare archival footage with still photographs, dramatic recreations and sound recordings. Much of it is concerned with the journey of Fuentes' grandfather from the remote nountains of the Philippines to the USA, and his experiences there as a tribal warrior on display, Intil his eventual mysterious disappearance.
