THE BEAVER TRILOGY

Director Trent Harris / 2001 / USA

Director Trent Harris met Groovin Gary in 1979 while testing some camera equipment in a carpark. Gary intrigued him with bizarre impressions of Sylvester Stallone, John Wayne and Barry Manilow and invited Harris to a talent show a couple of days later. The director arrived to find Groovin Gary (his CB radio name) in a fetching frock, being made up by the local mortician and preparing to do an Olivia Newton-John drag show. This surreal series of events so haunted Hams that he made a film about it...three times, each a successively more sophisticated attempt to capture the strange pathos, magnetic personality and odd life of Groovin' Gary.

In Beaver Kid 2. a young Sean Penn plays the cross-dressing not-so-super star In The Orkly Kid. Crispin Glover brings his own intensity and awkward charm to the lead role. "Harris' trilogy is a hilarious. fascinating document that transcends kitsch and curiosity. Groovin' Gary, wherever you are. it looks as if you ve made it after all."—Sight and Sound
