WORLD ON A WIRE (1973)

Director Rainer Werner Fassbinder / 1973 / Germany

“There are movies that make news and movies that are news. World on a Wire is one of the latter.” - Village Voice

R.W. Fassbinder's epic, made-for-TV, science fiction mystery has been screened in cinemas on only a handful of occasions, making this event a holy grail for classic cinema fans - the opportunity to see an iconoclast at the height of his creativity.

Recalling Alphaville and 2001: A Space Odyssey while foretelling The Matrix and Avatar, Fassbinder's film is based on a book by Daniel Galouye - Simulacron 3 - about a community of ‘identity units' who, unbeknownst to them, live inside a super computer.

Regular players from Fassbinder's ensemble feature, along with dizzying cinematography and a bubbling undercurrent of paranoia and sexual unease. Even the 70s Euro styling, which never fails to return to fashion, reveals Fassbinder as being ahead of his time.
