THAT SUMMER

Un été brûlant

Director Philippe Garrel / 2011 / France/Italy/Switzerland

That Summer has a sweet retro taste of the Nouvelle Vague.” - Hollywood Reporter

A four-hander about friendship and fidelity from veteran French auteur Phillipe Garrel (Regular Lovers; Frontiers of Dawn, MIFF 09), That Summer follows hip artist Frédéric as he strikes up a friendship with penniless movie extra Paul and his girlfriend Elisabeth. When Frédéric and his Italian movie star wife Angèle head to Rome, they invite Paul and Elisabeth along - ultimately leading to a series of events that will change all their lives forever.

As Angèle, Monica Bellucci perfectly captures her character's vulnerability and sensuality, while the director's son, Louis Garrel, effortlessly inhabits the tormented Frédéric.

Set in Paris and Rome, the film is Garrel's first in over a decade to be shot in colour, which he complements with a moody soundtrack courtesy of John Cale. At times almost uncomfortably intimate and intense, That Summer is an intricate and intriguing film for discerning audiences.
