THE REST OF THE WORLD

Le reste du monde

Director Damien Odoul / 2011 / France

Joy, sorrow and secrets around the family dinner table.

Eve, a young woman whose boyfriend commits suicide just as she learns she is pregnant, heads with her sisters to dinner at their widowed father's house. During the meal, his new wife (Emmanuelle Béart, in a wonderfully unhinged role) unwittingly reveals a family secret that propels the sisters to seek answers to questions they never knew they had - questions about the role of parenthood, family relationships and, ultimately, personal identity.

Originally made for television by actor-director Damien Odoul (The Story of Richard O, MIFF 08), The Rest of The World is an engaging story full of half-truths and family skeletons, featuring delightful performances by Béart, Mathieu Amalric and luminous newcomer Marie-Eve Nadeau.

“You can always rely on French cinema to deliver the best ‘dysfunctional family around the dinner table' drama.” - Screen Daily
