GAINSBOURG BY GAINSBOURG: AN INTIMATE SELF-PORTRAIT
“Ugliness is, in a way, superior to beauty, because it lasts.” - Serge Gainsbourg
Singer. Poet. Artist. Actor. Filmmaker. Novelist. Troublemaker. Icon.
Serge Gainsbourg lived an extraordinarily unlikely life. As a child, he fled Nazi-occupied Paris with his Jewish family, and made his living as a piano player in bars. He was romantically involved with Brigitte Bardot and Jane Birkin. He wrote Luxembourg's 1965 Eurovision Song Contest entry, and caused scandals across the continent with his sexually suggestive music, becoming one of the most influential musicians of all time.
Constructed using footage and audio recorded by Gainsbourg himself, Gainsbourg by Gainsbourg is essentially a posthumous autobiography. It's the story of a boy growing up in tumultuous times, his obsession with art and sex, and the power he finds in his own incredibly unique voice.
