MIFF TRAVELLING FILM FESTIVAL SONG OF THE SEA GEELONG
MIFF TRAVELLING FILM FESTIVAL - SONG OF THE SEA (GEELONG)
"This visually stunning animation masterwork so adroitly mixes the magical and the everyday that to watch it is to be wholly immersed in an enchanted world." – Los Angeles Times
When Ben discovers his six-year-old sister Saoirse is a selkie – a mythical Irish sea creature – their grandmother ships them off to the city, afraid that proximity to the ocean will put them in danger. But Ben and Saoirse embrace her new powers as they embark on the journey back home.
Director Tomm Moore also utilised Celtic mythology in his acclaimed first feature Brendan and the Secret of the Kells (MIFF 2009). As well as as directing one of the chapters of Kahlil Gibran's The Prophet (playing in this year's program), he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature this year for Song of the Sea, which features a voice cast including Brendan Gleeson and Moone Boy's David Rawle.
"Moore distinguishes himself here as an exciting talent to watch, not only for his storytelling prowess, but also for his commitment to craftsmanship." – Consequence of Sound
