LOVER FOR A DAY
Veteran French director Philippe Garrel is at his poetic best in this gentle, Cannes award-winning exploration of love and fidelity.
Crashing at her philosophy professor father's apartment in the wake of a painful break-up, Jeanne discovers that he has a girlfriend, Ariane, who is the same age as her. As the trio try to negotiate the shared space, jealousies flare; but as the relationship between Ariane and Jeanne's father begins to falter, the two women develop an affinity.
Shot in lyrical monochrome, and starring his daughter Esther in her first major role, this new work by Philippe Garrel (In the Shadow of Women, MIFF 2015) once again brings a poetic touch to his perennial themes of fidelity and sexual freedom, and of the difficulties men and women face in communicating their desires while exploring relationships without conventional boundaries.
Co-winner of the SACD Prize for Best Screenplay in the 2017 Cannes Directors' Fortnight.
'A lithe, splendid picture … Garrel is nearly alone in continuing the French New Wave's revolution of creating celluloid myths from mere bedrooms and cafes.' – MUBI Notebook
