Those Who Love
The debut feature by Australia’s first female filmmaking team – the McDonagh sisters – Those Who Love is also one of their most successful. Only a small fragment survives, which will screen with the NFSA restoration of the sisters’ third film, The Cheaters.
Those Who Love was a box-office hit in its day, garnering rave reviews and outselling even Charlie Chaplin’s contemporaneously released The Gold Rush! Called "a dazzling triumph" and "the best Australian film that has yet graced the screen" by Everyone’s magazine – a kind of early Australian version of Variety – it was the story of a cabaret dancer of humble means who falls for the son of a rich man and struggles to gain the family’s approval.
