Three Floors
From Palme d’Or winner Nanni Moretti comes this highly anticipated new drama of disparate lives in an Italian apartment complex, fresh from its competition premiere at Cannes.
Twenty years after securing world cinema’s top prize with The Son’s Room, Moretti (April, MIFF 1999; The Mass Is Over, 1987) returns with this moving adaptation of Eshkol Nevo’s acclaimed bestseller. The Italian master transposes the novel’s action to Rome, where three families share a stylish apartment block in the city’s upper-middle-class Prati neighbourhood. There’s a young husband and wife, the former of whom harbours suspicions about an elderly neighbour; a lonely mother of two confronting mental illness; and a retired judge reflecting on her past as she deals with her troubled son and stern husband. As these stories entwine, each resident makes choices that trigger life-changing repercussions.
Set over a ten-year period, the star-studded Three Floors features commanding performances from Alba Rohrwacher (Happy as Lazzaro, MIFF 2018), Riccardo Scamarcio (Pasolini, MIFF 2015), Anna Bonaiuto (Il Divo) and Margherita Buy (Mia Madre) alongside the director himself.
“Nanni Moretti is one of the key makers of the modern personal cinema.” – The New Yorker
