Happy Clothes: A Film About Patricia Field

Director Michael Selditch / 2023 / USA

Venture behind the pink tutu with the legendary Sex and the City stylist to discover the creative process that made her a New York icon.

Twenty-five years ago, Patricia Field created instantly iconic onscreen looks for Sex and the City. Also responsible for the costumes on The Devil Wears Prada, Younger, Emily in Paris and more, she has collected praise and awards for her signature bright colours, oversized accessories, and wittily juxtaposed luxury labels and vintage finds. But Field has ruled downtown NYC since opening her eponymous boutique in 1966. For 50 years, she ran a joyfully queer paradise where drag queens and club scenesters rubbed shoulders with socialites while Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat sold their designs. At 81, this queer fashion luminary is still busy serving looks.

This vibrant documentary goes beyond archival nostalgia and praise from Field’s colleagues and peers – though you’ll hear from Lily Collins (Emily in Paris), Vanessa Williams (Ugly Betty), Sarah Jessica Parker and Kim Cattrall (SATC), and many more. Director Michael Selditch also follows the fuchsia-haired maven through her daily costume trawls, fittings and shopping trips to unveil the discernment, passion and hard work that underpin her sartorial magic.

“The film takes viewers down a rabbit hole of Field’s acid-colored creations and endeavors … and unveils a passion for people beneath Field’s passion for style.” – The Daily Beast
