Godzilla vs Mothra

ゴジラvsモスラ (Gojira tai Mosura)

Director Takao Okawara / 1992 / Japan

A gigantic egg is discovered on Infant Island and two miniature fairies guarding it predict the resurrection of Mothra’s archenemy.

When an enormous egg is transported to Japan, Godzilla suddenly appears, subsequently fighting the newly born larva Mothra. The latter’s archenemy, Battra, having destroyed the city of Nagoya, joins the battle, and a three-way melee across Yokohama ensues. Mothra takes advantage of the fierce underwater battle between Godzilla and Battra to return to Infant Island, but as she is attracted by the song of two fairies named Cosmos, she returns to Japan.

Outside of Godzilla, Mothra is most fans’ favourite kaiju. Who could blame them, when she’s so beautifully crafted in Godzilla vs Mothra, the 19th film in the series. It’s an epic journey of Indiana Jones proportions (and scenarios – falling bridge, anyone?), including proxy thief and ex-archaeologist Takuya Fujito (Tetsuya Bessho) spanning Thailand, Indonesia and back to Japan. With a heavy focus on environmental issues, this is a true visual feast, culminating in a spectacular battle between the three monsters.

“Effects lead Koichi Kawakita does an outstanding job with Godzilla vs Mothra … For fans who crave scenes of giant monster mayhem, it is likely to prove a delight.” – Fiction Machine
