Rowlandson's England
1955
/ UK
Rowlandson's robust good-humour, his shrewd observation and his moments of brutally accurate caricature are all expressed in the illustrations that make up the film. Its concern however, is not with the artist himself but with the England of the Napoleonic Wars as he interpreted it in his water colours - the farmers and soldiers, the stoutly jovial women, the vigorous country pursuits.
