The Lower Depths
Fine character acting is the outstanding feature of these two scenes from the famous Maxim Gorki play. The first excerpt faithfully sets the mood of the play - the story of a group of social outcasts living together. though with a certain amount of friction - and includes the famous oration on "What is Man?" The second excerpt offers an ironical touch when a drunken party is interrupted by the discovery that one of the group has hanged himself.
