From Cannes Critics’ Week, this austere but affecting drama portrays religious superstition colliding with the harsh realities of rural life.

In a drought-stricken stretch of barren Ethiopian farmland, a respected elder dies. When his grave is found unearthed, his coffin empty, a miracle is proclaimed. But is it the work of God or man? Seeking to explore questions of metaphysics, director Beza Hailu Lemma takes inspiration from Ethiopia’s religious pluralism – where Christian and Muslim beliefs intermingle with paganism – and crafts a moving, masterful fable about the relationship between faith, freedom and nature.
