Heavenly Creatures
An obsessive friendship between two teenage girls leads to an unspeakable crime in Peter Jackson’s tour de force, re-emerging for a special one-off 30th-anniversary screening.
In 1950s Christchurch, 14-year-old Pauline (Melanie Lynskey) meets new classmate Juliet (Kate Winslet), who has just moved from the UK with her well-off family. Unhappy with their lives in a staid and repressed suburbia, the girls withdraw deep into a bizarre fantasy world of their joint creation. But when faced with a devastating separation, the pair plot a horrifying and violent solution to stay together.
Based on a true story that shocked a nation and launching director Jackson and leads Winslet and Lynskey to international stardom, Heavenly Creatures paints a vivid and disturbing portrait of obsession, nascent desires and dangerous imagination that has lost none of its capacity to engross viewers. Appearing on the big screen again to celebrate its 30th anniversary, this critically acclaimed, hypnotic thriller is not to be missed.
“A breathtaking blend of the particular and the opaque, a deft juggling act with the two undefinable notions of joy and sin.” – Sight & Sound
